I went to a tiny high school in Arkansas. Because state law changed when I was in eighth or ninth grade, requiring them to offer a foreign language, they looked around until they found someone on staff who could teach another language. Spanish was the norm. But we had no one who could speak Spanish. So all us little hillbillies were taught a smattering of French by our librarian. I remember nothing. And while the teacher was nice enough, I had nothing like the experience you describe.
